Veterinary Assistant, Equine Hospital - College of Veterinary Medicine

Join the University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Assistant in our state-of-the-art Equine Hospital. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional care to our equine patients and supporting the success of our veterinary programs.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of functions within the Equine Hospital, including general care, feeding, cleaning, restraint, and exercising of equine patients. You will also be responsible for cleaning and disinfecting equipment, animal stalls, and treatment areas according to IACUC, USDA, and AALAC protocols, as well as recording daily observations and operating equipment.

As a Veterinary Assistant, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our experienced veterinary team, assisting with admittance and discharge of patients, and participating in teaching labs as needed. You will also be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the hospital, including the equine and farm animal loading area, and providing exceptional customer service to our clients.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Perform restraint for physical exams and medical procedures
  • Prepare quarters with bedding, water, and other supplies
  • Feed diets as prescribed to admitted patients
  • Exercise patients using special care
  • Record daily observations and report any issues
  • Assist in the admittance and discharge of patients
  • Operate equipment such as forklift, tractor, skid steer loader sprayers, treadmill, hot walker, float tank, slings, and sled cattle chutes
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the hospital, including the equine and farm animal loading area

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Basic knowledge of large animal care and handling, including lifting and restraint
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to use common hospital and farm equipment
  • Strong observation skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to follow directions and work with a diverse population
  • Ability to work with others in a respectful and cooperative manner

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 1 year of relevant experience working with large animals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional relevant experience preferred
