Senior Software Development Engineer – Cloud Networking, Distributed Systems, SDN Innovation & Large‑Scale Infrastructure (Remote) – arenaflex
Why arenaflex?
At arenaflex, we power the backbone of the modern internet. Our cloud platform runs one of the largest, most complex networks on the planet, delivering compute, storage, and AI services to millions of customers worldwide. We are relentless about customer obsession, constantly innovating to make the network faster, more reliable, and more secure. If you thrive in an environment where every line of code can influence billions of requests per second, you’ll feel right at home with us.
Role Overview
We are looking for a seasoned Senior Software Development Engineer to join our high‑impact networking team. In this role you will design, build, and operate software‑defined networking (SDN) services that manage traffic across hyper‑scale data‑center fabrics. You will work on the cutting edge of cloud infrastructure, shaping algorithms that react in real time to scaling events, failures, security incidents, and maintenance windows. This is a fully remote position, giving you the flexibility to work from anywhere while collaborating with a global team of engineers, product managers, and operators.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect & Own Services: Design end‑to‑end networking services, write robust, production‑grade code, and ensure they scale to millions of concurrent connections.
- Customer‑Centric Development: Partner with internal and external stakeholders to translate business needs into clear software requirements and execution plans.
- Feature Delivery: Lead the full lifecycle of feature development—from concept, design, and implementation to testing, deployment, and post‑launch monitoring—while meeting strict timelines and budget constraints.
- Team Leadership: Guide junior engineers, conduct design and code reviews, and champion best practices in software architecture, testing, and documentation.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to reduce operational cost, improve latency, and enhance reliability across the network.
- Security Excellence: Embed security best practices into every layer of the stack, from code reviews to runtime hardening.
- Innovation & Technology Watch: Stay ahead of emerging technologies, evaluate their fit for arenaflex, and drive adoption where they add value.
A Day in the Life
- Architect, design, implement, test, and roll out new networking features that increase scale and availability.
- Collaborate with product owners to refine user stories, prioritize backlog items, and align on delivery milestones.
- Run performance experiments in a sandbox environment, analyze telemetry, and iterate on algorithms that balance load across the fabric.
- Mentor a junior engineer through a complex debugging session, sharing insights on distributed tracing and fault isolation.
- Review security patches, update CI/CD pipelines, and ensure compliance with internal security standards.
- Participate in an “innovation hour” where the team pitches ideas for next‑generation network services.
Essential Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong foundation in at least one major programming language (e.g., C++, Java, Python, or Rust).
- Demonstrated experience designing and scaling large‑distributed systems, including familiarity with design patterns, reliability engineering, and performance optimization.
- Proven track record of leading technical design discussions, code reviews, and mentoring junior engineers.
- Deep understanding of networking concepts such as routing, switching, load balancing, and SDN principles.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, container orchestration (Kubernetes), and modern CI/CD practices.
- Strong communication skills—ability to articulate complex technical ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Hands‑on experience with modern programming languages such as Rust, Go, or advanced C++.
- Familiarity with network telemetry, observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana), and automated testing frameworks.
- Background in security engineering, including secure coding practices and vulnerability mitigation.
- Previous work on software‑defined networking, network function virtualization (NFV), or large‑scale data‑center automation.
Core Skills & Competencies
- Problem Solving: Ability to break down ambiguous, large‑scale problems into actionable engineering tasks.
- Ownership Mentality: Proactive in identifying gaps, proposing solutions, and driving them to completion without waiting for direction.
- Collaboration: Comfortable working in a distributed, cross‑functional team environment, respecting diverse viewpoints.
- Adaptability: Thrive in a fast‑moving, startup‑like culture where priorities shift based on customer impact.
- Data‑Driven Decision Making: Use metrics, logs, and experiments to guide design choices and validate hypotheses.
Career Growth & Learning Opportunities
At arenaflex, your career trajectory is limited only by your ambition. Senior engineers often evolve into:
- Principal Engineer – shaping the technical vision for entire service domains.
- Engineering Manager – leading larger, multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Product Lead – bridging technology and business to define roadmap priorities.
- Technical Fellow – recognized as an industry authority on networking and cloud infrastructure.
We invest heavily in continuous learning: you’ll have access to tuition reimbursement, internal tech talks, conference sponsorships, and a library of on‑demand courses covering everything from advanced algorithms to leadership development.
