Applied AI Engineer Intern

Assurant is looking for an Applied AI Engineer Intern who has knowledge in AI, NLP, Generative AI, and Machine Learning (ML). This role predominantly involves hands-on development of AI/ML systems and will work within the Advanced Data Analytics GenAI team to build deeper AI‑powered analytical tools for our clients and teams, as well as implement innovative internal solutions for specific business challenges.

As an Applied AI Engineer Intern, you will help design, test, and refine AI models that support real business use cases. You will collaborate with data scientists, AI engineers, and delivery teams to contribute to practical, scalable AI applications.

What will be my duties and responsibilities in this job?

AI Solution Development & Alignment (10%)

  • Support translation of AI solution designs into model code, APIs, and inference services.
  • Help ensure AI deliverables align with business needs and model success metrics.

Applied Modeling & Programming (20%)

  • Assist in framing business problems into machine learning or algorithmic tasks.
  • Help prototype and test ML models and optimization approaches.

AI/ML Algorithm Implementation (25%)

  • Build and refine machine learning models, including predictive models and foundational NLP/GenAI components.
  • Contribute to algorithm performance improvements related to accuracy, latency, and computational efficiency.

Working With Large‑Scale Data & Experiments (20%)

  • Work with structured and unstructured datasets to extract insights and features.
  • Conduct experiments to validate models and evaluate model robustness.
  • Assist with model monitoring and documentation.

Research & Innovation Support (15%)

  • Stay current with emerging AI/ML techniques, especially in NLP, Generative AI, and deep learning.
  • Prototype new methods under guidance from senior engineers and scientists.

Cross‑Team Collaboration (5%)

  • Collaborate with AI engineers, analysts, and product teams to support model integration.
  • Assist in translating prototypes into scalable components within the broader system.

Communication & Documentation (5%)

  • Document model experiments, designs, and findings.
  • Present learnings to team members in clear, accessible formats.

What are the requirements needed for this position?

Education

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field with coursework in AI/ML.

Experience & Skills

  • Foundational knowledge of AI, NLP, Generative AI, and ML concepts.
  • Hands‑-on experience with Python and ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit‑learn).
  • Understanding of model evaluation methods and experimental design.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and intellectual curiosity.

Preferred Skills

  • Exposure to GPU‑accelerated computing (e.g., CUDA frameworks).
  • Familiarity with big‑data tools such as Spark, Kafka, or vector databases.
  • Knowledge of LLMs, prompt engineering, or agent‑based AI systems.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
